Brain Injury

Orange County Brain Injury and personal injury lawyers

Orange County residents who have a loved one with a brain injury should be aware that personal injury lawyers may be able to help provide the compensation that is their right under California law.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that there are roughly 2 million cases of traumatic brain injury (TBI) each year in the United States, with about 50,000 resulting in death. Sources for their data include birth and hospital records, trauma registries and personal interviews.

About 20-30 percent of injuries each year result in lifelong disability.

Young males are in the high-risk group because they’re most likely to be injured in motor vehicle accidents. Infants and the elderly are in the second highest risk group because of falls.

Brain injury causes

According to the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) National Resource Center, there are three leading causes of brain injuries in adults and children:

  1. Motor vehicle crashes. Car, truck and motorcycle accidents account for roughly half of all injuries. This includes brain injury-related deaths as well as nonfatal injuries.
  2. Firearm-related deaths
  3. Falls are the second-leading cause of nonfatal brain injuries
  4. Violence

Causes of brain injury vary among age groups. For very young children and older adults, falls cause the most injuries. For everyone else, the main cause of brain injury is motor vehicle accidents.

The Mayo Clinic offers these signs and symptoms for the different stages of a TBI:

  • Mild TBI (concussion):
    • A brief period of unconsciousness
    • Amnesia for events immediately before and after the injury
    • Headache
    • Confusion
    • Dizziness or loss of balance
    • Sensory problems, such as blurred vision, ringing in the ears or a bad taste in the mouth
    • Mood changes
    • Memory or concentration problems

    • Persistent headache
    • Repeated vomiting or nausea
    • Convulsions or seizures
    • Inability to awaken from sleep

Orange County brain injury cases

Unfortunately, accidents on our Orange County streets and freeways result in many injuries, and deaths, each year.  Some of these accidents, such as bicycle, motorcycle or car crashes can result in brain injuries that at first go undetected.  Brain injuries symptoms can take several hours to several days to appear, and sometimes it’s not obvious why the injured is having difficulty.

Consulting with doctors to be evaluated after an accident has occurred is very important.  Going back to the doctor if new symptoms appear is also crucial.  With many brain injury cases, early detection and treatment is critical.
