Burn and explosion cases often result in personal injury, product liability or wrongful death claims because explosions are unexpected and unanticipated, occurring as a result of someone else’s negligence – defective wiring or defective products; car, industrial or factory accidents.
Explosions often result in mass casualties and cause serious injuries, especially burns. From data about mass casualties provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
- Each year in the United States, 1.1 million burn injuries require medical attention.
- Approximately 50,000 burn injuries require hospitalization;
- Approximately 20,000 are major burns involving at least 25 percent of the total body surface;
- Approximately 4,500 of these people die.
- Up to 10,000 people in the United States die every year of burn-related infections.
- Only 60 percent of Americans have an escape plan, and of those, only 25 percent have practiced it.
- Smoke alarms cut your chances of dying in a fire in half.
Example of burn and explosion personal injury case
In 2007, an explosion at the Diamond Pet Food facility in Lathrop, Calif., so badly burned three employees that they had to be flown to the University of California, Davis, Regional Burn Center. According to the fire chief, the employees were welding in the tower of the pet food facility, and the welding operations in connection with the dust from the dog food caused the explosion.
Such catastrophic events can result in burns severe enough to require that the victims end up spending several months in burn centers, requiring expensive surgery and plastic surgery, depending on the burn type.
There are three different kinds of burns, classified by how severely the skin is damaged. They are:
- First degree of superficial burn. A superficial urn is usually red and turns white if you press on it. Only the top layer of skin is damaged.
- Second degree, or partial thickness burn. These burns involve the top layer of skin and a portion of the second layer of skin. Partial thickness burns are often broken down into two types, superficial partial-thickness burns and deep partial-thickness burns.
- Superficial partial thickness burns cause blistering and are painful. They typically heal within three weeks with minimal scarring.
- Deep partial thickness burns re dry and may appear ivory or pearl white. They take longer to heal and usual produce some scarring. Skin grafts are usually recommended for these types of burns.
- Third degree, or full thickness burns destroy the first and second layers of the skin. They are dry, with a dark brown appearance. Most full thickness burns are best treated with early removal of the dead tissue, skin grafting and long-term use o compression therapy to minimize scarring.
